Article: Bishop John Mulcahy Served Boston archdiocese; at 71

The Most Rev. John J. Mulcahy, who served the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston as an auxiliary bishop for 17 years, died Tuesday at Salem Hospital. He was 71.

Bishop Mulcahy was suffering from kidney disease, which had forced him to resign in 1992 as the auxiliary bishop of the North area.

As auxilary bishop, he was one of the principal assistants in church administration to Cardinal Bernard Law.

Born in Dorchester, Bishop Mulcahy was ordained in 1947. After assignments at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church in Newton Upper Falls and Blessed Sacrament Church in Jamaica Plain, he became spiritual director at Cardinal O'Connell Seminary in Jamaica Plain in 1962.
