Jeremiah J. Harrington of Hyde Park, a retired Boston police sergeant and former police chief of Emmanuel College, died Friday in New England Deaconess Hospital of cancer. He was 75.

Born in Boston, Mr. Harrington graduated from Boston English High School in 1938. He served in Germany during World War II as a sergeant in the Army.

During his 33 years as a Boston police officer, he was appointed one of Boston's first juvenile officers and was promoted to detective and sergeant. He was awarded many citations and commendations for meritorous service and twice was named Law Enforcement Officer of the year by the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
