Article: No more Red Line blues First of 86 high-tech subway cars enter service

Helen Stejskal and others riding in a 33-year-old subway car on the Red Line last week clapped their hands over their ears as the vehicle let out a piercing, 15-second screech near Broadway Station.

If they had waited on the platform a few minutes longer, they could have taken a car quiet enough to allow for polite conversation. Along came four of the 86 new Bombardier cars, all of which are scheduled to enter service by the fall.

"The Red Line's going high-tech," said Brent Auerbach, taking his first ride on the shiny new cars. "I've heard about this train," he said, as he eyed the flashing destination signs and the padded red seats smelling like new upholstery.
