Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the former first lady who surmounted awesome personal tragedies with instructive dignity and style, died last night in her New York apartment of complications from cancer. She was 64.

Mrs. Onassis died at 10:15 p.m., said a statement from her longtime friend, Nancy Tuckerman. Her children were at her side, as were her longtime companion Maurice Tempelsman and other family members.
