The cedar trees grow straight out of the pond, their roots beneath
green mats of moss that float on the tea-colored water. In this
strange "quaking bog," created by a melting glacier 10,000 years ago,
exotic plants eat insects that wander too near while others ward off
threats with a powerful stench, and an unmatched variety of dragon
flies buzz through the air.
More than 160,000 cars a day pass this bog on Ponkapoag Pond,
mostly harried commuters heading to or from their jobs in Boston five
miles away. But here on a narrow boardwalk in the center of the pond
the crush of civilization is drowned out by the twilight song of the
birds.
