AMONG THE top writers of books for children, Daniel Pinkwater has
always stood out, not only because he is exceptionally funny and more
than a little weird (who else could create The Snar\k|out Boys and
the Avocado of Death?) but also because he is, to use his own phrase,
"circumferentially challenged." Extremely challenged. In his jacket
photos, as in his popular commentaries on National Public Radio,
Pinkwater makes no attempt to disguise, let alone hide or excuse, the
sheer magnitude of his corporeal impressiveness. In fact, he
sometimes appears nothing less than that classic stereotype: the
jolly fat man.
