Edward F. Bowler, retired chief of the Winchester Police
Department, died Wednesday at his Florida home of a heart attack. He
was 79.
Mr. Bowler, known as "Connie," was born in Stoneham but lived in
Winchester for many years before moving to Florida.
He was educated in Winchester public schools, graduated from
Winchester High School and completed his education at Boston
University. He graduated from the FBI Academy in Washington in 1951.
Mr. Bowler was appointed to the Winchester Police Department as a
special officer in 1938. In one year he was named a permanent
department member, and he became a sergeant in 1949, a lieutenant in
1960 and chief in 1970. He retired in 1976.
