Article: Ex-officer indicted in rape Suffolk grand jury listens to prostitute's account

After one grand jury indicated it didn't believe a prostitute's contention that she was raped by a Boston police officer, the Suffolk district attorney's office turned to a new grand jury yesterday to win an indictment against former Officer Leo F. Coogan, according to sources.

In a highly unusual move, prosecutors impaneled a second grand jury to hear evidence in the Coogan case while the first grand jury was still sitting, sources said.

Coogan, 61, of Milton, was indicted on charges of rape, extortion and indecent assault and battery after the prostitute testified yesterday before the second grand jury that the officer threatened to arrest her April 29 unless she performed oral sex.
