Article: Ward still has some fight left

LOWELL -- The Kid couldn't have been more than 9 or 10, just another dreamer with sweat-stained boxing wraps dangling from his tiny fists and an Orlando Magic basketball shirt covering his thin chest. He was standing in the middle of Mickey O'Keefe's gym on Mount Vernon Street, a squat building in a section of Lowell that resembles an old pug's nose.

Alongside The Kid was a professional fighter named Mickey Ward, a Lowell guy who once seemed headed toward a world title before it all went sour and his hands began to throb and he got thrown into fights just for the money until the hopelessness of his situation broke his spirit and he walked away.
