For years, Washington artist Lois Mailou Jones has been praised
for her multicultural paintings. The thought makes her laugh.
"All art is multicultural, cross-cultural, hybridized," she says
in the tone of an art professor, something she was for 47 years at
Howard University. "These ideas aren't new to me. The hybrid
character of art seems so obvious to me." Obvious, perhaps, to one
who has crossed cultural boundaries throughout her 89 years.
Born in Boston and classically trained in painting, as well as a
world traveler and part-time resident of Haiti, Jones shows no
inclination to slow down, despite a heart attack and triple bypass
surgery five years ago.
