Struggling to survive deep financial trouble and declining
enrollment, Bennington College is attempting to radically remake
itself, trimming tuition by 10 percent, cutting its faculty and their
job security, eliminating all academic departments and emphasizing
interdisciplimary studies.
Together, the moves announced last week represent the most
dramatic restructuring at any college in the nation. Educators
elsewhere said Bennington's proposals are so extreme and the
experimental college so unusual that few others are likely to follow
suit. But experts monitoring the efforts of US colleges to adjust to
