Article: Japanese premier, Cabinet resign New leaders expected before summit talks

TOKYO -- In a last-ditch effort to save their political lives and stabilize the government for major trade negotiations, Prime Minister Tsutomu Hata and his coalition Cabinet resigned yesterday.

The course chosen by Hata probably means a new Cabinet can be formed before summit talks with the United States and a meeting of the Group of Seven industrial nations early next month, allowing Japan to avoid the embarrassment of sending a lame-duck leader to those talks for the second straight year.

Coming just before the Parliament was to vote on a no-confidence resolution that Hata seemed certain to lose, the resignations also opened up a possibility that he might be able to return to office ...
