BEN & JERRY'S GROWS UP HAS `CARING CAPITALISM' BECOME A CASUALTY OF BIG-COMPANY REALITY?

WARREN, Vt.-- It was party time at Ben & Jerry's. There were free bagels, ice cream and employees dressed as "dancing pints." And under a massive tent at the foot of a grassy ski slope more than 2,000 shareholders gathered last weekend to hear co-founder Ben Cohen, intoning like a cantor, open the company's annual meeting.

Dressed in a black samurai robe, co-founder Jerry Greenfield raised a sword and split open a Ben & Jerry's pint container to show off the thick swirls of ice cream inside.
