Article: A computer `immune system' is sought to thwart viruses

In a new strategy aimed at combating the rapidly growing threat of computer viruses, researchers are trying to create a computer "immune system" that, like its biological counterpart, would automatically protect computer software against the potentially damaging intruders.

Some better kind of protection, most computer users agree, is urgently needed because existing "vaccine" software cannot keep up with the onslaught of thousands of new computer viruses.

The viruses are programs that copy themselves repeatedly inside a computer's memory. They often are designed to wreak havoc by erasing files at a specified time.
