When news of the stolen Thomas Jefferson portrait filtered around
Boston yesterday, ears perked up at the FBI and the Isabella Stewart
Gardner Museum, where one of the largest art heists of all time
remains unsolved.
Boston police are leading the investigation into the theft of the
Jefferson portrait, but the FBI is following it closely, in part to
find leads that could help find $200 million in art stolen from the
Gardner Museum on March 18, 1990.
"We're interested because it's another art theft," said William J.
McMullin, an FBI spokesman. "We'd be interested in details on this
theft and tracking down whoever's responsible to see if there's any
