The Berkshire Hills, 2 1/2 hours west of Boston, are a gently
rolling mountain range where small towns retain their flavor.
The country setting is a mecca for aficionados of culture.
Tanglewood in Lenox is the summer home of the Boston Symphony
Orchestra and Becket is home of Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, a
forum for some of the nation's most innovative dance troupes.
The Berkshires have long been a favorite hideaway for vacation
homes. Wealthy residents of New York, Boston and Chicago have built
summer palaces here that rival mansions in Newport, R.I. Famous
writers produced classics here, including Longfellow, Hawthorne, and
Edith Wharton. Today, ambassadors and movie stars escape here.
