Article: Dysentery imperils refugees 30,000 Rwandans expected to die

GOMA, Zaire -- Thriving in the unsanitary conditions of the refugee camps here, a dysentery epidemic that will probably claim 30,000 more lives is ravaging the Rwandan refugees, health officials said yesterday.

They made their assessments as the first of about 3,000 US troops arrived in the Rwandan capital of Kigali. Within a few hours, the 85 soldiers had restored power to the mortar-bombed airport. That will allow round-the-clock operations for 25 aid and military flights a day in the relief effort to feed millions of Rwandans driven from their homes by civil war and massacres.
