"Make no small plans" was the motto of urban planner Daniel Burnham, the designer of the 1893 Chicago world's fair, whose manmade lagoons and towering office buildings enthralled Americans a century ago.

That quest for bigness endures. But today's farseeing city planners need to respect limits and persuade businesses and residents to do the same.

A plan to build a 62,000-square-foot Stop & Shop superstore on Memorial Drive in Cambridge has polarized the community. Most parties want a food store on the site but disagree on size and neighborhood impact.
