SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- A year ago, Ray Crittenden seemed a long shot
to play in the National Football League. He had little playing
experience and was in the Patriots' training camp as a free agent.
By the end of the season, though, he was second on the team in
total yardage, with 805 yards receiving, returning and rushing.
Now that he has NFL credentials, he also has battle scars. He
underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove cartilage in his knee last
year and now has swelling in both knees.
"That was my first injury ever," Crittenden said. "When they said
I had to have it operated on, I said: `Surgery? No way.' But it was
just a procedure, in and out of there the same day."
