COMPOSERS CONFERENCE
At: The Jewett Arts Center at Wellesley College, Saturday
night.
WELLESLEY -- The Composers Conference has observed its 50th
birthday with two full weeks of activity at Wellesley College,
culminating in two high-profile public concerts. Despite the
anniversary, the atmosphere was not celebratory; all the serious arts
are threatened these days, and none more seriously than new concert
music, so a bunker mentality prevailed. On the other hand, new and
demanding art has always been threatened in a world that has
constantly been changing, and important talent always finds new ways
to reach a new public. It's the others who have to worry.
