VINEYARD HAVEN -- The hottest topic of conversation this summer on
Martha's Vineyard among year-rounders and longtime summer residents
is not which famous people are visiting or when they're arriving or
where they may be staying.
That stuff is old hat to most of them.
The serious buzz is about traffic jams -- the most upsetting
effect that near-record numbers of visitors have had on island life
this season.
Perspective is important here: Traffic jams, island style, do not
remotely resemble the crawl-and-stall torture sessions of Boston's
Southeast Expressway, or the logjams around Cape Cod's Sagamore
Bridge on any given Friday night or Sunday afternoon in summer. The
