As commanding as the Berkshire hills, as bedazzling as the gold on
the State House dome, conventional wisdom has delivered its verdict:
William F. Weld will win reelection easily.
In the sacred scrolls of conventional wisdom, a New York Times
headline is Deuteronomy in granite. On Wednesday's front page,
"Massachusetts Governor Cruises Election Road" delivered a prominent
blessing upon Weld's presidential ambitions and a curse of
expectations that the most artful spin surgery cannot heal.
Weld and his campaign protest the notion of cruising and its
nautical mates of coasting, gliding and breezing, all of which
suggest a 20-point victory. The ...
