As commanding as the Berkshire hills, as bedazzling as the gold on the State House dome, conventional wisdom has delivered its verdict: William F. Weld will win reelection easily.

In the sacred scrolls of conventional wisdom, a New York Times headline is Deuteronomy in granite. On Wednesday's front page, "Massachusetts Governor Cruises Election Road" delivered a prominent blessing upon Weld's presidential ambitions and a curse of expectations that the most artful spin surgery cannot heal.
