Jessica Tandy, the beloved actress long revered for her stage
performances before enjoying widened popularity in movies and TV,
died yesterday at 85 in the Connecticut home she shared with Hume
Cronyn, her husband of 52 years and frequent collaborator.
Miss Tandy, who won her first Oscar at the age of 80 for playing
a vinegary matriarch who becomes best friends with her black
chauffeur in "Driving Miss Daisy" (1989), will be remembered for a
delicacy and dignity that never concealed enormous strength,
unsentimental keenness and a thoroughgoing professionalism. She
succumbed to ovarian cancer, which she had battled for five years.
