For someone who has earned a place in history, Gerry Adams
remains a shadow to most people, certainly most Americans.
He is to some an apologist for terrorism. To others he is the man
who at great personal risk has tried to turn around a battleship --
militant Irish nationalism -- that for centuries plied a single
course: that the only way to get the British government to take you
seriously was to kill somebody.
Adams arrives here today to kick off a nine-city, two-week tour of
the United States, aimed at capitalizing on the Irish Republican
Army's decision 24 days ago to call a cease-fire so the republican
movement can devote all its energies to politics.
