NEWTON -- By now, parents should have heard their children's teachers explain curriculum at back-to-school night. Student clubs, under the guidance of teacher advisers, should be mapping out the year's activities. High school teachers should be quick to write college recommendations.

But not in Newton.

A suburb whose name connotes fine schools finds itself roiled in a contract dispute that is fraying the relationship between families and schools. For the second time in two years, teachers here are staging a work-to-rule job action, following the letter of their old contract to protest the lack of a new one.
