CUZCO, Peru -- History is starkly spelled out in the architecture
of this provincial capital of the Andes. The rooftops are all the
curved red tile of the Spanish colonial era, but the foundations of
many important buildings consist of a mortarless patchwork of huge
gray stones -- the last remnants of the ancient Inca empire.
In Cuzco and throughout other parts of Peru today, a movement is
gaining momentum to give those stones, and all they stand for, more
recognition. Inspired by the worldwide backlash of indigenous
peoples against colonialist trappings, some activists want to reclaim
