WASHINGTON -- The CIA leadership maintained a stoic calm
yesterday, while dissident agency officers kept up their whispering
campaign against the director and Russian spooks beat the bushes for
information after Tuesday's stinging congressional attack on CIA
efficiency and leadership.
CIA spokesman Mark Mansfield dismissed as baseless reports that
the director, R. James Woolsey, had already submitted his resignation
or would do so soon. "That's a categorical `no,' " Mansfield said.
On Tuesday, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence accused
the agency of major security lapses that had allowed confessed spy
Aldrich Ames to supply Moscow with secrets for nine years and
criticized Woolsey ...
