Standing next to the Araban Coffee sign on elevated Summer Street, the casual observer sees a jumble of low brick buildings, rail lines, parked cars and tractor trailers stretching into the distance.

This once-overlooked expanse of low-rent industrial property to the west of C Street in South Boston has come into the public eye recently as the Menino administration's chosen site for a $440 million Boston convention center.

The possibility, however remote, of a convention hall rising on this 27-acre parcel has real estate brokers salivating. It also has some businesses operating out of the 27-acre site at least mildly concerned.
