DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK, Fla. -- As we skimmed over
opalescent waters, looking down over shadows of shipwrecks and
sharks, our journey by seaplane to Fort Jefferson seems as
spectacular as the destination.
Brick fortress walls suddenly rise out of a flat plain of water
and reef at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles west of the
Florida Keys. Inside lies a green sanctuary graced with 19th-century
pathways and arches.
Fort Jefferson, a former Civil War outpost and military prison
on Garden Key, remains a remote historical gem and one of the
country's most isolated park sites.
