Article: Look Out! Perching Atop Towers in National Forests

When our family made arrangements to camp out in an abandoned lookout tower in Colorado's San Juan National Forest, we anticipated having remarkable views, a lush forest to explore and a comfortable perch to sleep in, 55 feet above the ground.

We found all those things. But no one warned us about the cows.

There they were, a bovine welcoming committee of more than 50 cattle, grazing and milling around the base of the tower when we drove up. We mooed at them and they ambled off, only to return and surround the tower once we had settled into our rustic penthouse suite. Eventually they shuffled away, and we had the tall wooden tower to ourselves for two July nights.
