Four years ago, a young composer itching to write an opera was
browsing in the Boston University Bookstore when he came across an
edition of Virginia Woolf's play "Freshwater" with illustrations and
a cover design by Edward Gorey.
"At the time I was interested in setting some Gorey to music, and
I liked Virginia Woolf, so I bought the book," Andy Vores recalls.
When he read it, he knew he had found the subject for his first
opera. "Virginia Woolf's play is a dream, full of bright, colorful
and eccentric characters. The story is hilarious, but it also has a
deeper resonance."
