McCOMB, Miss. -- The pecan, a nut so succulent that a pie is
named in its honor, is back on the market in time for holiday season,
despite a year of adversity.
A freakish ice storm in northern Mississippi devastated many
orchards, and tropical storms flooded crops in Georgia and Alabama.
Louisiana was spared natural disasters, but production there is also
estimated to be down to half of last year's figure.
This leaves supply short in the Deep South home of the pecan, and
demand is heavy as a taste for pecan pie converges with Christmas.
Prices have nearly doubled, from $1.75 to $3.25 a pound, but it has
not deterred the bakers, restaurateurs and homemakers who are busy
