Irving Kenneth Zola, a Brandeis University professor and champion
of the rights of the disabled, died Thursday of a heart attack in his
Newton home. He was 59.
Professor Zola was born and raised in Boston. He graduated from
Boston Latin School in 1954 and from Harvard College, where he
studied sociology, in 1958. He continued his studies at Harvard
University, and received his doctorate in 1962 from the Department of
Social Relations.
Professor Zola began his career as a research sociologist at
Massachusetts General Hospital. Since 1963 he had taught at
Brandeis, where his main research interests included ethnicity, the
sociology of health and illness, and disabilities studies.
