Massachusetts education officials awarded charters and money to
the state's first 14 publicly funded charter schools yesterday, but
only one of the three for-profit schools proposed by the
controversial Edison Project was tapped to open.
The 14 schools, including two elementary and two high schools in
Boston, are expected to open next September. Each showed readiness
by developing five-year budgets and securing buildings, among other
requirements, said Education Secretary Piedad F. Robertson.
"These pioneers have identified educational needs in their
communities and shown innovative, sound ways in which they will meet
