Article: Medex 20% rate hike rejected State tells Blue Cross to consider 4%-5% jump

In a victory for seniors, the state Division of Insurance has rejected a 20 percent rate hike request from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts for its Medex Gold plan, but said it would consider a 4 to 5 percent increase.

"We found {Blue Cross' request} to be excessive," said Sylva Apelian, a deputy secretary in the Department of Consumer Affairs, which oversees the insurance division.

Blue Cross said it would review the decision, made Friday but issued publicly yesterday, "so that we can determine our options."

Those options include filing a new rate request based on the state's estimate that an increase of 4 to 5 percent would be acceptable; appealing the decision in court; or ...
