During a recent performance of "Black Nativity," a child gazed
upon a stream of singers clad in flowing white robes and marching
through a darkened auditorium illuminated only by candles. As the
choir, singing "Go Tell It on the Mountain," moved rhythmically past
the boy, he shrieked in delight and grabbed his mother's arm, his
face unfolding in a toothless grin.
For 25 years, Langston Hughes' venerable "Black Nativity" has
never failed to move audiences enchanted by its spirited retelling of
the Christmas story. Produced by the National Center of
Afro-American Artists, "Black Nativity" combines dance, narration and
