There was a time -- not too long ago -- when the incessant merengue rhythms of the Dominican Republic filled the weekend night air in Boston, and the swinging strains of Puerto Rican salsa, Cuban son and Colombian cumbia twisted all through the area. There were Los Violines in Jamaica Plain and the Taurus in Roxbury. And if all else failed, there was always the Wonderland Ballroom in Revere.

But they're all gone.
