There was a time -- not too long ago -- when the incessant
merengue rhythms of the Dominican Republic filled the weekend night
air in Boston, and the swinging strains of Puerto Rican salsa, Cuban
son and Colombian cumbia twisted all through the area. There were
Los Violines in Jamaica Plain and the Taurus in Roxbury. And if all
else failed, there was always the Wonderland Ballroom in Revere.
But they're all gone.
Gone, too, are the days when a merengue or salsa musician could
count on making decent money playing at those clubs. "It's almost
impossible for local bands to make a living playing clubs here
anymore," said Alex Alvear, the director of Arte y Cultura at IBA.
