Article: Rail foes buoyed by ferry trial run Opponents of restoring commuter trains argue for boat service instead

SCITUATE -- When a ferry left Scituate Harbor and reached Rowes Wharf in Boston within 45 minutes, it did so with the hopes and blessings of local residents who think a new commuter railroad is a bad idea and that boat service is the way to go.

The Dec. 10 trip was considered a success, and the results are more fodder for opponents of the restoration of the former Old Colony Railroad line to Scituate.

Local activists say the 92-foot catamaran's trip should change the state's plan for the railroad restoration. And state officials, who were made aware of the trip's results, said they will give some consideration to using a ferry system in conjunction with buses.
