Article: Air Traffic Controllers Protest Proposal to Privatize Their Jobs; Profit Will Come Ahead of Safety, Airport Travelers Told

Nearly 500 air traffic controllers buttonholed passengers at 50 major airports yesterday, saying they are worried about the future of aviation safety and protesting federal proposals to turn operation of air traffic control over to the private sector.

In the Washington area, dozens of controllers handed out leaflets at National, Dulles International and Baltimore-Washington International airports. The controllers warned that outdated equipment and thin staffing at air traffic centers and towers may compromise safety.

They also complained that plans to privatize the air traffic service "would jeopardize safety due to the fierce bottom-line pressures to hold costs down."
