WASHINGTON -- R. James Woolsey, who was attacked by Congress for
his handling of the Aldrich Ames spy case and who was long the target
of criticism inside the CIA, resigned yesterday as director of
central intelligence.
Although abrupt, Woolsey's resignation had long been expected.
Members of his personal staff started looking for other work last
month, and only the sweeping Republican victory in the midterm
elections seems to have postponed his departure.
Explaining his departure in a statement, Woolsey spoke of his
desire to spend more time with his family. In a brief statement,
President Clinton praised Woolsey's two-year tenure at the agency.
