VELVET CRUSH
with Gumshoe and Happy Bunny

Velvet Crush is uncannily true to its name, a band whose blends
of soft and strong elements tend to wedge in one's brain as if forced
inside with a fur-lined vise. The sound is not original, but
unmistakable: a sonic cascade of ringing guitars played full-on, a
barely-there bass line and an unflagging drum rumble marking time.
There's no mystery to the combination, an effective marriage of
sweet and sharp used by the Byrds, R.E.M., the Replacements (in the
band's sober moments) and a host of pretenders. As Velvet Crush
demonstrated Saturday night, there's nothing wrong with walking a
well-trodden ...
