ATLANTIC CITY -- Roberto Duran has been boxing professionally for
28 years, which is nearly the age of many of his opponents. Vinny
Pazienza, his foe tomorrow for the International Boxing Council super
middleweight title, was 4 years old when Duran had his first fight.
Duran appears to have pushed far past the limits of his ability,
and his credibility. He might have ended his career ignominiously
after surrendering to Ray Leonard Nov. 20, 1980, in New Orleans or
being knocked out by Thomas Hearns June 15, 1984, in Las Vegas. He
might have concluded it honorably after stopping Jose (Pipino) Cuevas
12 years ago in Los Angeles or losing the Leonard rematch five years
ago in Las Vegas.
