Article: Funding plan strains relations at United Way Massachusetts Bay agency wants more money for urban charities

Faced with a continuing decline in its funding, United Way of Massachusetts Bay is pushing a plan to funnel donations now going to suburban United Way organizations to Greater Boston instead.

The proposal has set off a wave of concern among much smaller, outlying United Ways. The issue is expected to be discussed at a board meeting Feb. 3 at Raytheon Co., said to be a leader in the push for change.

The proposal reflects the continuing squeeze on the Greater Boston United Way, which has seen donations fall from a high of $48.8 million in 1989 to $41.7 million in 1993, a 15 percent decline. The results of the current campaign are scheduled to be released later this month, but officials say ...
