One of the great careers in National Football League history
officially will end next Tuesday in downtown San Francisco when
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Joe Montana announces his retirement,
according to league sources. The official announcement of the news
conference will come Friday.
"This has been a done deal for a long time," a source close to
Montana said yesterday. "After last season, he knew."
Montana, in San Jose for a police benefit last night, said he
wants to talk to football people he is close with. "It's one one of
those things I have to sit back and look at," he said, according to
the Associated Press.
Speculation has been rampant for months that the 38-year-old would
