WELLESLEY -- Drawing the figure with quick, bold strokes is a
fundamental part of art education nowadays. The model holds a pose
for five minutes; the artist draws, watching both the model and the
clock.
It wasn't always so. Academic figure drawing as practiced in the
19th century was a laborious and studied affair: The results could
certainly be elegant, but spontaneous they weren't. Enter Auguste
