NEWPORT, R.I. -- If houses were charms on a charm bracelet, Jean
Baker's small turret-Victorian here would keep company with her 1834
Greek Revival row house in Boston's Bay Village; another Greek
Revival, but brick and built later, on Brooklyn's Cobble Hill; and,
briefly, a mansard pile on Staten Island with fireplaces in every
room, to the count of 12, and a spectacular view of the East River
ferry. That's not to forget the New Jersey house which was
transitional, shingle tending toward Colonial Revival, or, a very
long time ago, one of Newton's nicer homes.
Eight years ago this month, and thinking ahead to eventual
retirement, the Bakers moved to Newport, a town they had long admired ...
