Gerald Henderson walked toward the Boston Garden scorer's table
and waited. Next opportunity, the Celtics guard was going to be
checking into the game. At least that was how the NBA's evening
stroll usually worked. Your coach gave you a motion, you went to the
table and, when you heard that checking-in horn, you replaced a
teammate.
Sorry, Gerald. Sorry, Coach. The system wasn't going to work
that way on this 1983 night. Henderson was told by coach Bill Fitch
to check in for No. 30, a fella named M.L. Carr. Maybe that wasn't
such a good idea.
"I'm not coming out," Carr said as Henderson approached.
Henderson looked at Carr, then to the bench, back at Carr and finally
