James William Fulbright, who died Thursday at age 89, was a man
who made a difference not only in the US Senate, where he served for
30 years, but around the world. He changed and continues to change
that world through the annual awarding of the international study
grants that bear his name. More than 200,000 Fulbright scholars have
expanded their international vision since the government program
began in 1946.
Fulbright was an original -- outspoken, impatient, imperfect,
wrong about civil rights but brilliant in his assessment of America's
