Carline Antoine wanted to breathe life into the rituals of Black
History Month and move Boston High School beyond the poetry readings
and pictures of famous blacks in classrooms each February.
After reading the biography of prominent Alabama civil rights
lawyer Fred D. Gray, the 17-year-old high school junior sent Gray a
letter last November asking him to visit her school. She did not
think that the man who represented Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and
civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks would even respond.
But yesterday, Gray, one of the giants of the civil rights
movement, stood in front of 200 Boston High School juniors and
seniors, and brought the movement to life.
