premiere, is Pier Paolo Pasolini's second film. But a lot of the
time its stormy star, Anna Magnani, seems to own it, snatching it
away from Pasolini, playing to the camera, whiplashing about, pulling
streets of people along in her gravitational field. As Mamma Roma, a
40-ish woman trying to retire from prostitution and live comfortably
